Creator Spotlight: Patreon is creating Patreon

Patreon has started their OWN Patreon page… so you can be a Patreon Patron on Patreon.

Their Patreon page is essentially their new blog, so all official Patreon news comes from there.

The money you pledge to the Patreon Patreon page goes toward OTHER Patreon Creators. So…

You can Be a Patron of Patreon Creators on Patreon by being a Patreon Patreon Patron!

Patreon News

Patreon released a new Study!
In a nutshell, the biggest source of income is pledges between 5 and 10 dollars
-Not surprisingly, the biggest volume of pledges (but lowest source of earnings) are in the lowest reported pledge bracket: $1.

What’s missing from this report is how many of these pledges are on a per creation basis versus a per month basis. $5 per month might equal less than $1 per creation, so it makes a big difference.

Six Patreon misconceptions

1. If you build it, they will come.
Patreon is not an ideal place to find new people to hand over their money. It’s a platform for people who already know what you’re doing to easily support you.

2. Pledges must start at $1.
Not a big deal, but if someone is particularly limited, it’s good to know that you can give less than $1 if you’d like to.

3. You HAVE to have great incentives/bonus/premium content.
As mentioned previously, your supporters are primarily supporting you because they want you to keep doing what you’re already doing. Don’t let your desire to thank them keep you from giving your all to the whole reason these people are supporting you in the first place!

4. Your creations should only be visible to Patrons.
Again, Patreon is a place for people who already love what someone is giving away for free to support the Creators they love! When Creators post creations and make them only visible to the patrons, they’re limiting their discoverability by new Patrons.

5. The Content has to be hosted ON Patreon.
Just because Patreon has an upload option when posting a new creation doesn’t mean Creators have to use it! I’ve known podcasters who try to upload each episode to Patreon, in addition to the fact that they’re already uploading it to their podcast website/RSS feed. This is unnecessarily time-consuming and can cause problems if you try to upload an audio file that is longer than an hour or any other file that exceeds the 100 MB limit.

If you are already posting your creations somewhere else, you can simply post the link to Patreon as a new creation, and allow your patrons to visit the creation in it’s natural context. Instead, consider using the upload function ONLY when sending out Patron-only content that is not available anywhere else.

6. Patreon’s pronunciation! 🙂
“Puh-TREE-awn?” “Pat-ree-AWN?” “PAY-tron?”

It’s just “PAY-tree-awn.”

PP16: 5 Ways Patreon Could Be Better

Instead of an interview, this week I’m talking about the main focus and purpose of the podcast, an interesting Patreon case study, and the top five ways Patreon could be improved.

Patreon Case Study: SMBC WebComic

Patreon did a case study on the Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal webcomic’s success. Hear Jack Conte talk about it here:

5 Ways Patreon Could Be Better

5. Do a case study on building Patreon support without a built-in audience.

Gaining financial support on Patreon is one thing when you have a built-in audience, but what about people who have grown their audience through Patreon?

4. More visible website/social media links.

website-and-social-media-location

3. More visible, intuitive downloads and creation links.

where-is-the-download-button

2. Automatically import RSS feeds.

Patreon allows users to automatically import any new YouTube videos to their Patreon page… what about other RSS feeds for webcomics and podcasts, etc?

1. ONE account for multiple projects.

Many creative people have multiple projects happening at the same time, myself included. Currently, in order to create a separate Patreon page for each project, you must also create a separate account for each project, instead of managing all the different projects pages from a single account.

Got anything you would add to this list? Let me know!

PP15: Adam Bash is creating SAYER

Get to know Adam Bash, who is creating a sci-fi horror comedy podcast called SAYER.

About Adam Bash

Adam was introduced to podcasting in 2008 and co-hosted a gaming podcast called Fall Damage. After the birth of his first child, he took a break from podcasting for a while.

When he was ready to return to podcasting, Adam knew he would have to switch formats to something that would fit better into his life, so he switched from an off-the-cuff talk format podcast with multiple co-hosts to a scripted drama podcast, primarily featuring his own voice. This has allowed him to produce the podcast around his busy schedule while also giving him the ability to perfect the dialogue.

About SAYER

SAYER is a dark comedy sci-fi podcast set on Earth’s man-made second moon, Typhon.  The eponymous SAYER is a highly advanced, self-aware AI created to help acclimate residents to their new lives, and their new employment with Ærolith Dynamics.

SAYER incorporates influences from video games like Portal and first person shooters, classic radio shows like War of the Worlds with a hint of Welcome to Night Vale in order to bring a uniquely immersive experience.

Adam’s favorite episode so far: Episode 6 – A Dreamless Sleep

SAYER Patreon Page

Highlights from the SAYER Patreon Page:

  • Incentives include PDF copies of episode scripts, thank you messages from SAYER himself, a thank you in the SAYER prequel comic, and more!
  • Milestones include a SAYER prequel comic (REACHED!), and a “resident of the month” program, where a different Patron will be celebrated each month!

PP14: Dominick Brascia is creating Dominick on the Air

Get to know Dominick Brascia, who is creating Dominick on the Air, a daily live internet radio show and podcast. One of his co-hosts, Chris Quandt (who joins Dominick every Friday), also joins us for this episode.

About Dominick

Dominick is an actor, director and radio personality, who has made appearances with big-wigs like Jim Carrey and David Hasselhoff, and been on Night Court, Steven Spielberg’s Amazing Stories, and Knight Rider. As a young man, he realized he really likes to perform, and through acting, directing and making movies, he found he could get some great ideas out there.

Radio

Dominick got started in radio by pointing out everything that a local radio personality was doing wrong. He was eventually offered an opportunity to fill in, and he has since been in radio for the past 14+ years, on stations in Texas, New York and California.

About Dominick on the Air

Dominick on the Air is a daily talk radio show; a perfect mix of commentary on the latest news of the day and stream of consciousness. While Dominick was co-producing the popular West Coast radio show, Armstrong and Gettyhe joined forces with some of the other supporting staff to start another radio show called The After Show, which was a show about the Armstrong and Getty Show. After months of not getting paid for doing The After Show, Dominick and his co-producer dropped that show. Dominick started Dominick on the Air as a podcast and internet radio show to replace The After Show, with the goal of receiving sponsorships through his Patreon page. Unfortunately, Dominick’s new solo show resulted in the loss of his job as co-producer of Armstrong and Getty. Dominick is now hoping to transform Dominick on the Air into a sustainable income.

Dominick’s Patreon Page

Highlights from Dominick’s Patreon Page:

  • Patron incentives include commercial spots and sponsorship spots.
  • Milestone goals include $2,000 to help keep Dominick on the Air.

PP13: Patreon News, Updates and Quick Tips!

In lieue of an interview this week, I’m talking about some exciting Patreon news, changes to the Patreon website, and some quick tips on building your Creator page on Patreon!

Patreon News

Patreon held a town hall meeting last week, where they shared some news and answered questions. They have made all 3 hours of this meeting available as a YouTube video, and as the first episode of the Official Patreon Podcast.

Highlights:

Patreon has raised 15 million dollars, which will be going towards developing feature requests, improving the platform and hiring more staff.

The Patreon website has improved: The homepage has less emphasis on featured creators, and more emphasis on exploring new creations! The search function also works much better!

• As mentioned above, Patreon announced an official Patreon Podcast. All though their only episode so far is from the townhall meeting, they plan to release future episodes with Creator interviews, news and more helpful information!

The Unofficial Patreon Podcast

Meanwhile, this podcast will most likely see some spill-over from the built-in audience that the official Patreon Podcast has, and that’s okay with me!

Also worth noting: This podcast has made it to the #4 spot on iTunes New & Noteworthy under the “Visual Arts” category, and the #12 spot in N&N for “Hobbies & Culture”!

So I’ve got that going for me, which is nice.

Patreon Quick Tips

Here are some of the best practices I’ve been learning about creating a Patreon Page:

• Make videos!
Videos are fun, personal, and help the Patrons to feel like they’re supporting a person, not just a product!

• Set attainable incentives!
It’s great to give back, but remember the main reason people are supporting you is not to get something more from you, but to support what you’re already doing!

• Start with small milestones!
It’s good to have big goals, but having more attainable milestones will motivate you and your Patrons to reach those goals.

• Consider milestones that benefit the patrons!
It’s good to have milestones for things like new equipment or webhosting costs, but consider ways you can give back even more at the same time. For example, Ethan Nicolle distributes a PDF copy of a graphic novel to each of his Patrons for every milestone achieved on his Patreon page!

PP12: Breakroom Studios is creating Podcasts and Videos

Get to know Chris Quandt, Chris Cowan and Nate Henderson, who are creating comedy podcasts and videos from Breakroomstudios.

About Quandt, Cowan and Nate

Cowan and Quandt met when they both became engaged (and subsequently married) to two girls who happen to be sisters, and have been best friends since! With a mutual interest in acting and creative media, podcasting seemed like a natural outlet!

Quandt’s friend Nate joined later and fit in perfectly!

Podcasting

When podcasting took off in iTunes and Garageband, Cowan posted on MySpace, asking if anyone was interested in starting a podcast with him. Quandt and another friend, Brandon P. Turner both replied, and started creating a podcast called The MadCast. Brandon eventually moved away, later replaced by Nate Henderson.

The MadCast was eventually replaced by a similar podcast called No Show, which was later replaced by their current podcast, Pop Mockers.

A standard feature of their earlier podcasts was a comedy skit featuring two office co-workers, Hank and Hal, who often had zany conversations in the company’s break room. When Cowan, Quandt and Nate began doing more than just a single podcast, they adopted “Breakroom Studios” as the umbrella for their various projects.

Breakroom Studios

In addition to Pop Mockers, other podcasts include Hank and HalThe Truth About Special Needs, and, of course, Patreon Podcast.

Breakroom Studios has also created several videos, including The Hank and Hal Movie, parts One and Two, as well as an ambitious webseries, The Bible News Network.

Highlights from Breakroom Studios’ Patreon Page:

  • Incentives include raffles, showtunes, and personalized songs!
  • Milestone goals include livestreams, making Hank and Hal part 3 and bringing back The Bible News Network!

PP09: Mari Cody is creating Art & Photography

Get to know Mari Cody; artist, photographer and… unicorn?

About Mari

Mari is a photographer, cat-whisperer, innovative knitter and unicorn from San Diego.

Photography

Mari got started in photography at age 10, when she received a camera as a gift. She is self-taught, which allows her to think outside of the box with her photography, but also sometimes results in her photos not quite matching up to what others might consider “technically” correct.

She sees photography as a way to capture the beauty in things that are often easily overlooked. Recently, she has begun working more on macro photography; capturing tiny subjects in a large way.
